Kacy's first day in France

Kacy has arrived in France.  Getting the air ticket so that she arrived one day early, she is spending the first night in a Best Western hotel across the street from the airport.  We enjoyed skyping with her this first day, and she enjoyed the shower and the rest before meeting her family and program director tomorrow.
Feeling slightly hungry, she ordered room service IN FRENCH.  She ordered French fries and Ice cream.  She got THIS!   A cheeseburger, jo jos, a banana split, and two rolls!   Oh, and having nothing smaller, she tipped the busboy with a $5 euro.

Theater comes to LaCreole

DALLAS -- LaCreole Middle School sixth-grader Jack Hannan crouches close to the ground with his arms drawn into his body, making himself as small as possible.
He runs around a circle of his peers, doing his best imitation of a mouse.
Like the rest of the middle schoolers at the Jan. 9 acting workshop, he seems a little uncomfortable with the idea at first, but his dramatic sense prevails.
Hannan and 11 other LaCreole students attended a preaudition workshop last week to learn acting techniques from student teacher Megan Wacker.
They are preparing for auditions for the play "Coyote Tales." Through an after-school drama program, Wacker and the cast will create a full-scale production.
Thursday and Friday, middle school students auditioned for the 20 parts in the play, a collection of Native American animal myths. Cast members will play animals, but with human characteristics.
At the workshop Wacker helps the students, even acting out their ideas. She twists and leaps, becoming a salmon swimming upstream, then asks one of her students to follow. Sensing embarrassment on their part, Wacker gives them a pep talk.

"Theater is about being something that you aren't," she said, saying they shouldn't be afraid to be silly if the part calls for it.
The message resonated with some of the students.
"I'm super excited because drama is like my favorite thing in the whole world," said Amanda Zeh, a seventh-grader planning to audition for a role. "I like it because I get to be something other than myself. I get to get away from the normal and be crazy."
Wacker, an education major at Western Oregon University and a student teacher at Dallas High School and LaCreole, is directing the play as part of her practicum requirements. She wanted to work with middle school students, but was disappointed to learn LaCreole didn't have a drama program.
"Blair (Cromwell, DHS theater teacher) and I decided why don't we just make one?" Wacker said, adding it's important for kids that age to be creative. "Having outlets like art, or band or choir to put themselves into and have an identity, that is crucial."
Younger students can participate in Dallas High plays geared for children, but this production is solely for LaCreole students.
"I thought it would be a fun chance to do a play with kids my own age," said sixth-grader Taylor Snoha. "We may have to have a bit more practice, but I think it will be fun."
Wacker designed "Coyote Tales" to be more than just the typical drama club production.
Last week's auditions tested aspiring actors' skills and their professionalism. Judging began when they walked in the room.
"That is something kids will face the rest of their lives," Wacker said, noting it's similar to a job interview.
Once finalized, the cast will rehearse every day until the performances March 14-16. Wacker said she expects the cast to improve together, to bond and boost each others' confidence.
"I really hope they take away a sense of accomplishment," she said. "It's easy to put kids in academic classes and it's easy for them to get discouraged if you get an `F.' This is something that everybody works toward. If we fail, at least we had fun doing it."

Kacy's new smile! Today was BRACES OFF day!!
BEAUUUUUUTIFUL!!

Some SOPHOMORE pictures :)

Nathan's certified!!

As of yesterday, Nathan is officially certified to train EPIC!

After four weeks of unorganized and dysfunctional training, Nathan put together his "lesson" presentation for Wednesday. Yesterday they received word that Nathan IS INDEED now certified to train others in EPIC -the new computer system that Legacy is installing in both their inpatient and outpatient systems. While this is the first time that inpatient and outpatient will go live simultaneously anywhere in the nation, it's still a little ways off.

This certification is just the first step in this two year committment that Nathan has taken on.

Working days has been a big change...but as well, he is now back to working a five day work week. When he was working nights it was only 8 nights every two weeks, so the work routine has not only changed daylight hours, it has also changed to the consistant 5 day week. The early mornings are different but the extra day is taking some getting used to for him.

In any case! - WE CELEBRATE THE CERTIFICATION!!
(and did we mention we pumped our septic tank this summer? -This breaking ground experience, pictured here, as we tore up the lawn, hunting for the thing, just felt appropriate for this announcement somehow. Meanwhile the family is very proud of dad for taking on this new job challange!!)

The lights are ok with the sound of.....

Well, the reviews are coming in on the Sound of Music in St Helens. Megan and Tiersa hit the back row last night as Kacy trudged up to the light booth for the halfway mark of the commuunity theater presentations.
Survey says - - - "Oh. My."

While this show has so much potential, it goes without saying that the stage lights are great, but the show is long. The tickets, in spite of the $4 off coupon on the back for sunshine pizza, are indeed $12, and even if you could call it done at half time - you still wouldn't think you got your money's worth.

It's always difficult not to appreciate all of the hard work and extreme effort that has gone into a presentation or walk off with positive comments when it doesn't come off smashingly.

The family CELEBRATES and APPLAUDS Kacy for her endurance. Her hard work and extreme effort in seeing through this obligation. As always, honey, your lights are fantastic. This show, has shown your fine abilities to work with even the most difficult people and to persevere through long uninviting times.

Megan's VBS Show

Megan is again charged this year with the serial play for her church's Vacation Bible School. This short play is a ten minute adventure each evening at the beginning of VBS at the church right next door to the Warren Country Inn.

The Helwig family applauds Megan for her vision to see this project through, as an alternative to film. It's time to see Theater in one of the intense purposes It's had in life - to bring a message to an audience. While this year's VBS experience has brought Megan frustrations of not working in the ideal theater company, her passion for the theater will take her to new growth, as she works with even the less motivated actors.

HURRAY FOR MEGAN!
